Mother Teresa’s life was dedicated to helping the poor, the sick and the most vulnerable. At the age of 18, she left Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, after which she went to India. There she gradually began her long-standing missionary and humanitarian work.
In 1950, with the approval of the Holy See, Mother Teresa founded the order of the Missionaries of Charity, whose primary mission was to care for the “poorest of the poor”. Her work has spread throughout the world over the years.
Her dedication to human dignity and helping people in suffering has also been recognized internationally. In 1979, Mother Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in helping people in suffering.
Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997 in Calcutta, at the age of 87. In 2016, Pope Francis declared her a saint. Today, 116 years after her birth, Skopje commemorates one of the most famous people born in the city. Her name remains permanently associated with Skopje, but also with a universal message of humanity, mercy and help to those who need it most.
