Two gas interconnectors to boost Macedonia’s geostrategic importance dramatically, claims PM Mickoski

The construction of two gas interconnectors with Serbia and Greece will dramatically boost Macedonia’s geostrategic importance, Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Friday adding one of them will be inaugurated by mid-2027 and the other by the end of 2028.

One of the interconnectors is expected to become operational by the end of the first half of next year, while the other is slated for completion by the end of 2028, noted the PM.

Responding to a reporter’s question following the opening of a new primary school in Skopje’s Chento, Mickoski stressed that the two gas pipelines would create opportunities for investors interested in developing electricity generation facilities that use gas as fuel. Furthermore, he highlighted the potential for converting existing coal-fired thermal power plants to run on gas during their reconstruction and modernization.

“At this moment, as never before, two gas interconnectors are being built, one with our southern neighbor and the other with our northern neighbor. I expect one to be synchronized and put into operation by the end of the first half of next year, while the other should be fully synchronized by the end of 2028. This will dramatically increase Macedonia’s geostrategic importance. Furthermore, these two gas pipelines will create opportunities for investors interested in power generation facilities that use gas as fuel. At the same time, it will enable us to reconstruct and modernize coal-fired thermal power plants by converting them to run on gas, thereby preserving jobs and ensuring that these facilities continue to generate power,” elaborated Mickoski.
