The Democratic Union (DS) party led by Pavle Trajanov demands that the Macedonian Parliament adopt an amendment to the laws in a fast-tracked procedure that would ban the production of cannabis for medical purposes.
“Since 2017, the competent Ministry of Health, in cooperation with other institutions, has issued 61 licenses so far to companies that could produce marijuana for medical purposes. It is more than clear that control has failed, which is why fake thefts, showdowns between the drug mafia, confiscation of cannabis by the police, etc. have occurred, but the criminal business has continued, because the drug mafia, which also included holders of the highest state positions from the previous government, has acquired enormous financial power and political influence,” the DS party said in a press release.
The Democratic Union strongly supports the action of the Ministry of Interior to seize cannabis and insists on acting indiscriminately, adds the release.
“The owners, formal and informal, of companies that produce cannabis should be publicly announced, who issued the licenses for cannabis production and when, etc. The Ministry of Health, in cooperation with other competent institutions, should announce how many quantities of cannabis have been produced, where those quantities are (sold, in stock, stolen, etc.) and how much profit has been made. The seized 32 tons of cannabis (5 in Serbia and 27 tons in Macedonia) are, for now, just scratching the surface of this drug business, which has serious consequences for the health of young generations, political stability, the rule of law and the international reputation of the country,” the DS said.
