The Gostivar Basic Court has ordered 30 days of detention for the three suspects in the case of drinking water pollution in Gostivar – Artana Asani, Leon Uredini and Vadedin Dervishi, who hold management positions at the Public Enterprise Communal Hygiene.
The decision was made by the judge of the preliminary procedure, Kjirko Mihajloski, after the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office of Gostivar submitted a proposal for determining the measure of detention.
The spokesperson for the Basic Court of Gostivar and Judge in the criminal department, Dragoslava Veselinova, informed that the court accepted the proposal of the prosecutor’s office and issued a decision for detention with number KPP 237/26.
“The decisions for detention have been delivered to the suspects, and they will serve the measure in the Correctional Prison Skopje,” said Veselinova.
According to the court, the detention was determined due to the gravity of the crime for which the suspects are charged, but also due to the danger of flight and the possibility of influencing witnesses who should be examined during the investigation procedure.
“The Gostivar Main Public Prosecutor’s Office conducted an investigation procedure against the suspects Artana Asani, Leon Uredini and Vadedin Dervishi, on suspicion of having committed a serious crime against the environment and nature. The prosecution proposed detention due to the threatened sentence, which is at least four years in prison, as well as due to the danger that the suspects will influence witnesses or flee,” said Veselinova.
The three are suspected of having, through actions related to the water supply system in Gostivar, allowed the mixing of polluted water with water from the drinking system, after which the water in the city and surrounding settlements became unsafe for use.
