Jovan Donev (71), former ambassador, university professor, prominent researcher and activist in the field of social sciences, analyst and long-time columnist for NetPress, passed away at the Skopje Clinical Center Wednesday after a brief illness.
Jovan Donev graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje in 1979. He received his master’s degree in 1986 and his doctorate in 1993, devoting a significant part of his scientific interest to the international political aspects of the Macedonian issue.
He built his scientific career at the Institute of National History in Skopje, where he attained the title of scientific advisor and full professor. He also taught at several higher education institutions, including the American College University in Skopje and the Justinian I Faculty of Law.
From 1999 to 2012, he was the Executive Director of the Institute for Social and Humanistic Research Euro-Balkan, and previously he was the Director of the Ohrid Summer University.
In his diplomatic career, Jovan Donev was the Ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, based in London, from 2013 to 2017.
During the same period, he was also accredited as Ambassador to Ireland and Iceland, representing Macedonia in an important period of its international relations.
He was also a member of the Security Council of the Republic of Macedonia in 2017.
Donev is the author and co-author of numerous scientific papers and publications in the field of history, international relations and foreign policy. Among his more significant works are publications dedicated to Macedonia in international agreements, the relations of the great powers towards the Balkans and the Macedonian issue during the period of the Balkan Wars.
In recent years, he has been active as a columnist and political analyst.
