FUEN seeks MAEI support for implementing resolution on Macedonian national minority in Albania

The Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN) has sent an official letter to Vasil Sterjovski, leader of the Macedonian Alliance for European Integration (MAEI), regarding the recently adopted Resolution on the Macedonian national minority in the Republic of Albania.

The resolution, submitted by the Macedonian Society “Ilinden” based in Tirana, was adopted by the FUEN Assembly of Delegates during the annual Congress held on September 19, 2026, in Helsinki, Finland.

In her address, FUEN President Olivia Schubert emphasized that the organization—which represents autochthonous national minorities in Europe and advocates for their rights before the UN, the Council of Europe, the EU, and the OSCE, seeks MAEI’s support for the effective implementation of the adopted resolution.

This resolution officially calls upon the Albanian authorities, specifically the Government of the Republic of Albania, to sign and ratify the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, to enable members of the Macedonian minority to freely declare their identity, and to take effective measures against any external political pressures aimed at denying or assimilating the Macedonian identity. Furthermore, a request has been made for the Municipality of Pustec to remain a distinct local self-government unit and not undergo territorial changes, not to be merged with other municipalities, under the new reform.

In his response to FUEN, MAEI head Vasil Sterjovski expressed sincere gratitude for the Union’s continued concern and commitment to protecting and promoting the rights, identity, language, and culture of Macedonians in Albania.
