West Nile virus claims its 11th victim in Macedonia

A 66-year-old woman died from the West Nile virus at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases after affecting her central nervous system. The patient had suffered from comorbidities and the hospital treatment was difficult, said Doctor Fadil Cana, director of the Skopje Clinic for Infectious Diseases. The West Nile death toll has risen to 11, Dr. Cana said on Wednesday.
He noted that there have been a total of 11 deaths caused by West Nile virus.

“Another patient with a severe form of West Nile virus is currently hospitalized at the Clinic; she has been in the intensive care unit for an extended period and is on mechanical ventilation. She has been at the Clinic for nearly a month. We are encouraged by the fact that there have been no new hospitalizations since September 25th,” Dr. Cana added.
