The Macedonian Government has no mechanism for any control over Makedonski Telekom, although it is one of the owners of this highly profitable company, company sources told NetPress.
The Government owns 34.81 percent of the shares in Makedonski Telekom, which makes it the second largest owner, right behind the company Kameni Most Komunikacii AD Skopje, which has 51 percent of the shares.
NetPress sources brief that in June 2018, a decision by the then Government allowed the statute of Makedonski Telekom to be changed, thus removing the only mechanism that the Macedonian government had for control over the company.

“With the amendment to the statute, which was made with the go-ahead of the Macedonian Government in June 2018, the Operations Director post was canceled – a post that was filled at the proposal of the Macedonian Government. This function had a signature tied to the General Director. Until then, nothing in Makedonski Telekom could pass without the consent of the Government. Since then, no one has asked the Government for anything,” NetPress sources revealed.

Certain individuals from the then political leadership were allegedly handsomely rewarded for this step, and according to NetPress sources from Makedonski Telekom, the influence of these individuals is still great on the company’s management.
