At the request of the Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a meeting was held Thursday with a representative of the Embassy of the Republic of Albania in the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT) said in a press release on Friday.

“In the spirit of friendly relations between the two countries, neighbors and NATO allies, official information was requested from the Albanian authorities at the meeting regarding the event that occurred at the Kjafasan border crossing, during which citizens of our country were not allowed to enter the Republic of Albania,” the MFAFT informed.

The VLEN party had previously requested an official response from Tirana after on July 8, MPs Bekim Qoku and Adnan Azizi, as well as Deputy Secretary General of the Government Hasim Murtezani, were detained for an hour at Kjafasan, and the border authorities did not allow one person from the escort to enter the country.

The head of the Albanian State Police, Skender Hita, told reporters that the border police “acted according to the law.”

“The three people with diplomatic passports were informed that they could continue their journey. The fourth person, who was with them, had legal obstacles at the border and could not travel to Albania,” he said.

Hita said that the other three citizens decided not to continue their journey and all headed back to Macedonia.
