Macedonian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade TimchoMucunski reveals that talks are being held ‘under the radar’ to unblock Macedonia’s EU path, but stresses that the Government will not accept a solution at any cost, especially when it comes to issues related to identity, language, history and culture.
“We often speak about the fact that there are talks. We must not share the details, because if we start sharing them with the public, then we condemn them to failure. However, citizens should be reassured that the Government has clearly drawn red lines and issues that it is not prepared to negotiate. We are working on a solution, but not a solution at any cost and not a solution that will not be sustainable,” Mucunski said.
The Macedonian FM emphasizes that the key difference between the current and previous governments is that the current government, as he says, is not prepared to make concessions regarding identity issues.
“Almost exactly five years ago, we reached a political consensus in the Parliament through a resolution related to national positions. But the then-government led by SDSM and DUI trampled on that consensus in just a few months. Today, a new consensus is necessary, but the opposition first needs to accept the reality and the consequences of the decisions made at the time,” said the foreign minister.
