Lake Ohrid has topped Time Out magazine’s list of the most beautiful places in Europe, ahead of a number of well-known tourist destinations on the continent.
Lake Ohrid has been described as a much more accessible and peaceful alternative to Italy’s popular Lake Como. While Como in the Lombardy region attracts more than a million tourists a year, Europe also offers a number of other impressive but less visited lake destinations, Time Out writes.
“Europe’s oldest natural lake straddles the border between two wildly underrated destinations (North Macedonia and Albania), but it’s the part and surroundings on the North Macedonian side that get the pulse racing. Lake Ohrid is behind a gorgeous city packed with churches, and while it may no longer boast the 365 churches it once did, those that remain add an undeniable sense of beauty to it all. There’s not much better than the view of the 13th-century Church of St. John at Kaneo, backed by the azure-blue grace of the lake. It’s a truly spectacular sight. Tip: The earlier you take the short walk from the city center to the Church of St. John, the better.
