A 69-year-old man from Skopje’s Gazi Baba municipality is the seventh patient to die of West Nile fever in the country, Macedonian Health Minister SashoKlekovski told at a press conference Thursday.

A total of 19 people are currently hospitalized, and one new suspected case has been registered from the Radishani settlement. Klekovski indicated that the last few newly registered cases are from Skopje North. By the end of August, a total of 55 cases of West Nile fever had been registered in the country.

Responding to a reporter’s question about why the deceased were only men, the minister referred to the largest study conducted in America, which included more than 3,000 cases, and showed that the rate of the disease with the neuroinvasive form, as well as mortality, is higher in men.
