Almost 17,700 workers laid off in the second quarter of 2020

Almost 17,700 workers in Macedonia lost their jobs in the second quarter of 2020, as a result of the coronavirus crisis, according to data by the State Statistics Office of Republic of Macedonia.

From a total of 811 thousand people employed in the first quarter, from April to June their number decreased to almost 794 thousand. This means that exactly 17,690 employees were laid off. The total number of unemployed, on the other hand, from the first to the second quarter has increased by 14,700 new people, due to the newly registered persons in the Employment Agency who have just finished their education, then applied and are waiting for employment or people who decided to apply due to other reasons.

State statistics show that unemployment in the second quarter of 2020 was 16.7 percent, which is a slight increase compared to the first quarter, when it was 16.2 percent.
