Minister of Foreign Affairs Bujar Osmani said on Wednesday that bilateral relations are at a very low level after Bulgaria issued several protest notes to North Macedonia and called the interim Macedonian Ambassador in for a meeting.
“Relations are recently at lowest level, but I believe there’s potential to restore trust, normal communication and cooperation if there’s rational debate and approach. Election don’t usually help rationalize debate, not just in Bulgaria but everywhere. The situation was similar when North Macedonia was holding election. That’s always the case, election hold hostage political debate, but I’m convinced that there’s potential to restore normal communication and mutual respect,” Osmani told reporters during the presentation of the French Development Agency’s role and upcoming activities in N. Macedonia.
He added that Bulgaria and the EU will benefit from starting negotiations with North Macedonia in June, because further delay would make the process unpredictable, which is not in the best interest of the region nor EU.
