The high mortality rate of COVID-19 atients is due to the fact that they are treated for a long time outside the hospital and come late with poor parameters, and many of the deceased were cancer patients, with unregulated diabetes, heart disease, had multiple surgeries, said Minister of Health Venko Filipche on Tuesday.

The highest mortality due to COVID-19 is registered in people of over 60 years of age, and 73% of them were people with chronic diseases. In the country so far 5,901 people have died in the coronavirus crisis, and last week there were days with 36 or 32 deaths per day of this fourth COVID-19 wave.

Regarding the mortality among younger patients, Filipche said that those people were not vaccinated, mentioning the case from August 28 when a 24-year-old patient left the hospital in Resen on his own responsibility and died. The number of deceased vaccinated people is small, he added. There are 1,000 patients with COVID-19 in the hospitals, the most overcrowded are the hospitals in Tetovo, Gostivar, partly in Kichevo, Struga and Ohrid

According to the latest figures, 52% of the population over 40 years of age has received at least one dose of vaccine and 28% of the population over 18-39 years of age has been vaccinated with at least one dose of vaccine.
