The healthcare sector is facing losses of medical staff, especially specialists who go to the private sector or go abroad to work, the European Commission’s (EC) progress report on N. Macedonia.

The report assesses that access to public health specialists remains problematic.

“Despite providing increased wages in order to keep healthcare workers, the healthcare sector is facing losses of medical staff, especially specialists who move to the private sector or go to work abroad. The staff continues with the need for specialized training in the use of advanced health equipment,” reads the EC report.

Regarding the reimbursement of funds paid for health services, the EC estimates that patients pay approximately one third of all healthcare services without being reimbursed, which increases the social differences.
