Political analyst Edward P. Joseph does not consider that there is a guarantee that Bulgaria has recognized or will recognize the Macedonian identity in the future. That is why he suggests that the United States should publicly confirm the Macedonian identity, which according to him would be accepted by both the Macedonians and the Albanians in the country. He compares his idea to the moment when, in 2004, the administration of George Bush recognized Macedonia under the constitutional name Republic of Macedonia, despite Greece’s objections.

Joseph proposes that the USA affirm the Macedonian identity through a special Bilateral Cultural Agreement with a text taken from the Prespa Agreement. This is how he answered the U.S. ambassador Kate Marie Byrnes who previously addressed the citizens saying that “Bulgaria has already recognized the Macedonian identity, so if that is true then Sofia will have no objections” in the accession negotiations with the EU.

“The U.S. will only reaffirm what Bulgaria has already signed,” Joseph states in his tweet.
