The two-week Virgin Mary’s fast, which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, begins on Sunday for Orthodox Christian believers.
This fast was instituted in prayerful memory of the Blessed Mother of God, and in order to demand the prayerful intercession of the Blessed Mother of God even more intensively during its duration.
In terms of length of time, it is the shortest of the four annual fasts and lasts 15 days, that is, every year it begins on the day of the celebration of the Holy Seven Maccabees (August 1/14) and ends on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (August 15/28).
