Macedonia, despite its 30-year aspiration to become a member of the Euro-Atlantic organizations, has been denied that right. It is because of the unprincipled demands of the neighbors that culminated in the historical ethno-national demands of Bulgaria, said the leader of opposition VMRO-DPMNE Hristijan Mickoski in his address to the General Assembly of the Centrist Democratic International CDI.
“As a country, we always do everything to contribute to European values, regional stability and security. But the question is whether those same values are shared when it comes to our accession to the EU. We were the first country in the region to sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement, we became a candidate for the EU together with Croatia, and we were supposed to become a member of NATO at the same time. However, due to the unprincipled demands of our neighbors, we are still in the lobby today – outside of the negotiations,” Mickoski stressed.
The opposition leader added that ‘despite this, the country must not give up, and that VMRO-DPMNE and the government it will lead will do everything to ensure that the true criteria for membership are met’.
