UN praises Macedonia for its efforts in protecting victims of domestic violence

The United Nations Committee Against Torture has finished reviewing the fourth periodic report of North Macedonia on its efforts in implementing the provisions of the Convention against Torture. The committee’s experts praised the state for its increased capacity to protect victims of domestic violence, while raising questions about the treatment of patients in psychiatric hospitals and conditions in reception centers for asylum seekers, reads the statement.

UN Committee expert and country reporter Ana Racu said that the Committee welcomes the legislative and political efforts made since North Macedonia ratified the Istanbul Convention in 2017. Additionally, in 2023, amendments were made to the Criminal Code, criminalizing all forms of violence and revising the definition of rape.
