The Government is monitoring potential food price spikes in supermarkets. Sunflower oil and egg prices are currently surging. However, the Government has a plan and will not allow any fluctuations in the prices of food products which would affect the standard of living of citizens, Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Sunday in response to a reporter’s question on whether the situation with product price hikes is being monitored.
Prime Minister Mickoski assures that if the Government sees unethical behavior by supermarket chains, but also by suppliers and manufacturers, it will take all measures at its disposal.
“The State Market Inspectorate (SMI) is on the ground and from what we see, there is a spike in the prices of oil and eggs. I am talking about a price increase, which is visible and significant, in other products the prices in principle do not deviate from those that are average from the previous period. So that part has been noted, we analyze. That is justified by increased prices on stock exchanges, etc. Now stock exchanges may sound strange for eggs, it is not specifically the egg that is a stock exchange product, but the food that the carriers use is a stock exchange product, so that implies for the eggs themselves. You know that oil is a stock exchange product. So that is how that increase is justified. We are monitoring it, calculating it and will not allow any fluctuations that will harm the citizens’ living standard,” PM Mickoski underlined.
