A ban on access to social media for children under 12 and regulation of access for minors up to 16 are supported by 76 percent of respondents in a survey by the Institute for Democracy Societas Civilis Skopje.

“The public in Macedonia is sending a clear and strong message: urgent measures are needed to protect children from the harmful effects of social media. According to the results of the survey, as many as 76% of respondents support the two highest categories of support for banning access to social media for children under 12 and regulating access for minors, while 58% fully support this measure. The average support score is 4.3 out of 5, which indicates a broad social consensus that institutions must not wait any longer,” said the “For a Safe Childhood” civil initiative.

The survey was conducted by the Institute for Democracy Societas Civilis Skopje, via field research of a nationally representative sample of 1,000 respondents between February 27 and March 10.

These findings strongly support the demands of the “For a Safe Childhood” civil initiative, whose petition “Protection of Children Under 16 – Ban and Regulation of Social Media in Macedonia” has so far been supported by almost 3,000 Macedonian citizens.
