Deputy PM Nikoloski: Issue with Bulgaria could be solved in one afternoon if several EU members decide they want enlargement

It’s good that we are pursuing a dignified policy regarding EU integration and are not humiliating our own people and country. We do not kneel, but rather conduct politics with dignity, Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski said in response to a question about the country's EU integration

It’s good that we are pursuing a dignified policy regarding EU integration and are not humiliating our own people and country. We do not kneel, but rather conduct politics with dignity, Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski said in response to a question about the country’s EU integration, but also about the recently expressed position of Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski that he’s prepared to wait for decades without constitutional amendments, that is, that the current Government will not give in to demands for constitutional amendments unless it receives clear guarantees for the European integration process.

“We are doing what is expected of us. According to the Growth Plan, we are far ahead of the countries in the region, which will be confirmed in the new report expected in June. In the area of reforms, we are implementing what is required, but there are segments where we have no influence,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

According to Nikoloski, the real challenge in the whole situation is not Sofia, but the lack of a clear decision among key European centers on the future enlargement of the European Union.

“It’s clear that Sofia is not the only problem, but that it is a good excuse not to solve the problem. We are waiting for several large capitals to decide whether they want EU enlargement or not. If there is political will, the issue with Bulgaria could be solved in one afternoon,” Nikoloski said.

Regarding his previous statement that Albania will not become an EU member in the near future, Nikoloski says that he still stands by that position, clarifying that this is not due to insufficient reforms in Albania, but due to the uncertainty within the Union itself regarding enlargement.

“I’m sorry that I’m right, because my goal was to warn in a timely manner. The role of politicians is to make decisions based on information, but also to inform the public about reality, so that it can adapt accordingly,” added the Deputy PM and Minister of Transport.
