PM Mickoski: Gruevski’s asylum needs to be revoked for extradition request to be sent

Former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, who fled to Hungary in 2018, still has asylum and for that reason no new extradition request has been sent, says Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, following accusations from the opposition SDSM that the Government is dragging out the extradition procedure.

Regarding the comparison with Poland, which has already requested the extradition of its former officials, Mickoski says that these are different cases.

“They weren’t granted asylum – the Polish former members of the government. In our case, the former prime minister was granted asylum. In order to send a request for extradition, the asylum must first be revoked. That is the first step. If we send it now, we will get a negative response. We can send it tomorrow, no problem, just let’s look at things in a more substantive way. And the opposition should also ask Vasko Kovachevski to come back and face justice,” said PM Mickoski.
