As a social state, Macedonia provides health insurance for all citizens. There are many bases provided for by the law on health insurance that offer comprehensiveness, and for citizens who cannot be insured on any basis, there is a special basis. These are persons who do not earn income. These persons are insured through a program of the Ministry of Health that pays health insurance for them, said the Health Insurance Fund (HIF) director Sasho Klekovski.

Klekovski points out that as confirmation of the fact that there is no category of citizens that is not insured, the fact that there are currently 1,836,000 insured persons, of whom 470,000 or one in four citizens does not earn income speaks volumes.

“It’s true that we do not have categories that are not covered, but there are problems with health insurance in individual cases, but we are working on it. First, the working group of the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, the Public Revenue Office and the Insurance Fund, which looks at these criteria for those 470,000 people. Here we have two types of problems, first for people who have immediately given or received a dismissal and how to ensure the transition and secondly people who earn unregistered income, i.e. work in the gray economy in the country or who earn their income abroad. These people should not be insured with free health insurance,” said Klekovski.
