Austrian police said that rat poison was found in a jar of HiPP baby food, and that the product was recalled from more than 1,000 SPAR supermarkets in the country for safety reasons, but the Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) claims that there is no danger in Macedonia.

Austrian police said that a sample of one of the 190-gram jars of baby food with carrot and potato flavor, reported by a customer, tested positive for rat poison. The HiPP company immediately said that it could not be ruled out that a dangerous substance had been introduced into the product and that the jars of HiPP vegetables, carrots and potatoes may have been handled with malicious intent.

“To date, the Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) has not received a notification via the European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Unsafe Products (RASSF) that an unsafe baby food product from the HiPP brand (190 gram packaging in a glass jar with carrot and potato flavor) has been placed on the Macedonian market, which is subject to withdrawal and investigation in Austria and several European countries. The Agency is monitoring the situation and will react in a timely manner if necessary. Additionally, the Agency received a written notification from the food operator, an authorized distributor of HIPP products for Macedonia, that the disputed product has not been imported into the country at all, i.e. it has not been placed on the Macedonian market,” reads the Agency’s statement.
