The Municipality of Tetovo reacted on Monday to the procedure being conducted before the Constitutional Court for the renaming of streets in the city, accusing that certain judges, instead of protecting the interests of citizens, are engaged in daily politics.
The Municipality points out that the decision to rename the streets, made in the past, never became legally binding, because, as they state, the four governments in which DUI participated after 2007 did not adopt it as a government decision.
“Therefore, these names were never recorded in either the Cadaster or the Central Register,” reads the press release.
The local government believes that a procedure should not have been opened before the Constitutional Court precisely at a time when, according to the local government, the Municipality of Tetovo is in the final phase of the process for the official renaming of streets in the city.
The reaction assesses that behind such procedures lies the intention to create interethnic tensions.
“The tendency is clear – to create interethnic tensions. And behind this tendency stands the political party that officially distributes the statements of a constitutional judge,” the Municipality of Tetovo said.
Previously, DUI deputy leader Bujar Osmani assessed as “a serious blow to the Albanian identity” the decision of the Constitutional Court that abolished the renaming of several streets and the city square in Tetovo, calling it “a sad day for the Albanian people”.
In a social media post, Osmani reacted to the decision that returns the old names of the streets and squares, including the name “Marshal Tito” for the central square in Tetovo, instead of the name “Ilirija”.
