More than 160 doctors, midwives, medical staff and other health workers from all over Macedonia will undergo training to fight corruption in public health. The aim of the training is to improve knowledge and skills in recognizing, preventing and reporting corruption cases and thus contribute to building a fairer health system. This is an activity within the “Stronger System for Fairer Protection: Reducing Corruption in Health” project implemented by the Association for Emancipation, Solidarity and Equality of Women (ESE).

As part of this process, a trainers’ training was held last week, in which health workers who will hold the trainings in different regions of the country participated. Some of the topics of this training were ethical behavior in practice, the connection between medical ethics and corruption in health, the gender dimensions of corruption and mechanisms for reporting, protection and institutional accountability.

“We are aware that corruption is a common occurrence in healthcare and it enters through a small door, most often in order to obtain faster or better quality healthcare services. That is why it is important for healthcare professionals to play an important role in the fight against corruption. The most important principles in their work are charity, respect for the interests and rights of patients, the principles of fairness and confidentiality, as well as professional responsibility. They should follow these principles on a daily basis and thus prevent corruption from occurring,” says Professor Gordana Panova, who was one of the lecturers at the training.
