Sunday morning, on the day of the summer solstice, Macedonian Minister of Culture and Tourism, Zoran Ljutkov, attended the archaeological site of Kokino, where he watched the sunrise accompanied by mayors, MPs, directors and other guests.
The Kokino site, about four millennia old, is one of the most significant archaeological and archaeoastronomical sites in the Republic of Macedonia. It was here that the ancient inhabitants carefully monitored the movements of the Sun and celestial bodies, leaving testimonies of their extraordinary knowledge of natural cycles and their role in everyday life and spiritual culture.

The phenomenon of the summer solstice is particularly impressive, when from a precisely determined point on the site the sunrise can be observed through a specific rocky crevice, which is one of the most recognizable features of Kokino.
The visit is part of the activities of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in preparation for marking the significant anniversary – 25 years since the discovery of Kokino.
