The European Union Ambassador to North Macedonia, Michalis Rokas, said Wednesday that the EU remains fully committed to the country’s European perspective and that there is no doubt that the country is seen as a future member of the Union.

“You should have no doubt that the European Commission is fully committed to seeing your country as a full member of the EU,” Rokas said, addressing a session of the National Council for European Integration, dedicated to key aspects of the European integration process.

Referring to the country, Rokas assessed that it has shown capacity to implement reforms. He welcomed the work of the Parliament and the adoption of several laws, adding that with the support of the Delegation of the European Union, the institutions can successfully prepare for accession to the Union.

“I can say without hesitation that the country has shown that it has the capacity to implement reforms. I would like to welcome the work that has been completed in the Parliament, especially in terms of the laws that are being adopted in this house. Of course, with the support of the Delegation of the European Union, we believe that we can successfully prepare you for EU accession,” Rokas added.

He stressed that there are three key areas to which the country should remain committed, and one of them is the rule of law. Rokas stressed that there can be no compromise in these areas, because they are the basic criteria on which the accession process is based.

“A prerequisite for opening the negotiation chapters is meeting the strict criteria, especially in the area of the rule of law and their full implementation. These are standard procedures that apply to all candidate countries,” the EU ambassador stressed.
