On the 63rd anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Skopje, Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski laid flowers in front of the Monument to the Victims, paying tribute to those who died in the tragedy on July 26, 1963.

Gjorgjievski said that after six decades, Skopje still remembers the victims of the earthquake that on July 26, 1963 claimed more than a thousand lives and left behind destroyed homes and separated families.

Gjorgjievski recalled that after the disaster, the world lent a hand to Skopje and helped in its reconstruction, which is why the city has become a symbol of humanity and world solidarity.

“Today, it is our duty to continue where the generations before us left off – to preserve, advance and build with vision, responsibility and love for every part of it. To create a modern, safe and dignified Skopje, a city that will respect its past, but will courageously build its future. Because the greatest respect for those we have lost is to create a city worthy of their memory and for the generations to come,” Mayor Gjorgjievski said.
