Macedonian Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi signed a decision on Friday to hold a special mayoral election in Brvenica on October 18, 2026. The winner will succeed Mayor Jovica Ilievski, who died in office.
Speaker Gashi said the decision was made in line with the Constitution, the Electoral Code and applicable laws, and he expects the State Election Commission, the Municipal Election Commission in Brvenica and all competent institutions to conduct the election process professionally, impartially and in full compliance with legal procedures.
The Speaker urged all candidates and political entities to conduct the election campaign with dignity, with a competition of programs, ideas and a vision for the development of the municipality, instead of with rhetoric that incites divisions or undermines citizens’ trust in the democratic process.
