Last night at around 2 a.m. a wildfire broke right above the last houses in Skopje’s Zelenikovo, which thanks to the local population and their quick preventive reaction, as well as the swift reaction of the mayor of the Municipality of Zelenikovo and firefighters, a disaster was prevented and the fire was stopped a few meters from the last houses, informed the Protection and Rescue Directorate (PRD) head StojancheAngelov.
Angelov, in a video from the field, informed that at around 2 a.m. he received a phone call from a woman with a strongly agitated voice that the fire was approaching her house which is located in the last row, on the hill above Zelenikovo.
“I immediately called the Skopje fire station chief on duty. I informed him that there was probably a dangerous fire in Zelenikovo, after which he immediately told me that they already knew and their vehicle from the station in Drachevo urgently set off for the indicated location. In the meantime, the mayor of the Municipality of Zelenikovo, KostaManevski, was also notified of the fire, who in the interest of time urgently started the municipal fire truck that they had purchased some time ago and came with it directly to the houses where the fire was raging. At the same time, members of the volunteer firefighting company from Zelenikovo, who were alerted by him, arrived with it. Immediately, they began extinguishing the fire that was approaching the houses,” Angelov informed.
A mitigating circumstance, stressed the director of the State Fire Service, was the previous reaction of the residents of the last houses themselves, who provided partial protection in several places by spraying water and cutting down critical bushes and trees.
