Ilovica, agriculture and tourism mix well – experts call for sustainable development of the region

The development of mining and the preservation of other economic activities in the region do not have to be opposing processes, says geology professor Sonja Lepitkova.

In an interview with Sitel TV, Lepitkova assessed the Ilovica deposit as an ore body with an exceptionally favorable composition of the ore and singled out copper as a significant resource. According to the professor, if the project is implemented with modern technologies and according to appropriate environmental standards, the mine could be a plus for the region, especially through the creation of new jobs and an increase in local economic activity.

“If the mine exists and operates according to all modern standards, it will have 500 direct jobs,” said Lepitkova, pointing out that the average net wage could be between MKD 70,000 and MKD 90,000, with contributions paid.

The geology professor adds that the economic effect would not be limited to the mining sector alone. Increased consumption by employees would create additional demand for local products and services, including agricultural products. Therefore, according to Lepitkova, the development of the region should be viewed more broadly.

“One area should not stagnate at the expense of another area,” said Lepitkova, emphasizing that there should be an opportunity for the development of agriculture, tourism and mining in the same area.

The key, according to the professor, is for the development of mining to be modern, sustainable and with consistent respect for environmental standards. She reminded that 78% of the collection of the concession fee will go to the municipalities in which the mine’s concession field is located, and these are huge financial resources for the development of every sector in that region and citizens should give it a chance.

“I responsibly claim that the existence of the Ilovica mine, as one of the most explored facilities, is a beneficial for that region in every development sector,” noted the university professor.
