Major police operation to crack down on cigarette smuggling; 13 arrested

The Macedonian Customs Administration is currently conducting an operation codenamed “Filter” to dismantle a complex organized cigarette smuggling network. The operation involves freight forwarding, transport, and import companies, as well as private individuals, police officers, and customs officials.

The Customs Administration, through its Control and Investigations Sector and Investigations Department, and in coordination with the Ministry of Interior (MoI), the Public Security Bureau (PSB), the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office for Prosecuting Organized Crime and Corruption (PPO OCC), and the competent public prosecutor, conducted an extensive investigation. This investigation uncovered multiple instances of organized smuggling involving large quantities of cigarettes and the evasion of duties amounting to several million euros.

Thirteen suspects have been detained in the operation, and searches are currently underway at more than 20 locations in the areas of Gevgelija, Valandovo, Strumica, Dojran, Veles, and Skopje.

Further details regarding the “Filter” operation are expected from the Customs Administration later Thursday.
