Customs officers from the Skopje Customs Office discovered 12 illegal migrants from Egypt and Sudan while inspecting goods declared for import clearance at two different customs branches on Wednesday. The fact that both cases were detected on the same day clearly demonstrates the Customs Administration’s vigilance in monitoring the situation regarding illegal migration.
At the Tetovo customs terminal, officers suspected the possible presence of illegal migrants even before inspecting the truck; they requested assistance from the Ministry of Interior (MoI), subsequently discovering five illegal migrants in the cargo area.
Just two hours later, seven illegal migrants were discovered at the Skopje 3 customs terminal during an inspection of goods declared for import clearance. The migrants have been handed over to the Macedonian Ministry of Interior (MoI).
According to the Frontex latest data, illegal migration along the Western Balkan route has seen a 42 percent decline. These figures indicate that cooperation is yielding results, yet it remains our responsibility to stay vigilant and prepared for new challenges.
