“Don’t litter. Set an example” – Largest environmental cleanup campaign in Skopje begins, 30,000 citizens to take part

The City of Skopje launched its largest environmental cleanup campaign Wednesday under the slogan “Don’t litter. Set an example!”.

Around 30,000 citizens are expected to participate in this massive city cleanup effort, which will cover more than 100 locations, said Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski. He noted that the campaign is a joint initiative involving the City of Skopje, public enterprises, and all Skopje municipalities, with the participation of embassies, international organizations, primary and secondary schools, public figures, and a large number of citizens.

“Beyond the goal of creating a cleaner and healthier living environment, this campaign also serves an educational purpose, especially for the youngest,” said Gjorgjievski.

The capital’s mayor said that such activities would be organized twice a month. Responding to a reporter’s question, the mayor said that around 100 people have been engaged in the initiative through the Red Cross alone, while the number of participants from the administration, municipalities, and public enterprises is close to 1,000.

“I believe that, overall, around 30,000 people will take part in this activity today, which is an impressive figure. I do not think such a large number of people has been organized for an initiative like this since the 1990s,” Mayor Gjorgjievski noted.
