Undertaking investigative actions on the order of the Struga Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office (PPO) to investigate the causes of water pollution from the spring in the village of Shum, the investigative authorities found working machines of two legal entities from Veleshta that were carrying out crushing, excavation and transport of rocks on a large scale in the immediate vicinity of the springs, the Public Prosecutor’s Office said Saturday.
“Due to suspicions of criminal offenses Illegal exploitation of mineral resources under Article 225-a and Pollution of drinking water under Article 219 of the Criminal Code, the competent public prosecutor immediately submitted a proposal to the judge of the preliminary procedure for determining precautionary measures – a ban on legal entities from visiting the plots where they were excavating and a ban on undertaking any work activities in the area. The Struga Public Prosecutor’s Office continues to take action to provide evidence and investigate possible criminal liability in relation to the enormous pollution of the springs in Shum from which the area of the city of Struga is supplied with drinking water,” the PPO said in a press release.
