Four cases of malaria, three of dengue and one of the Zika virus have been registered in the country this year, Macedonian Minister of Health Sasho Klekovski said Tuesday and again called for following the recommendations for vaccination and prophylaxis from the World Health Organization when traveling. Of the eight cases of West Nile fever, about which the Ministry of Health informed yesterday, six people are at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, and the other two cases were registered in June and the patients were already sent home.
“Currently there are four vector-borne diseases under observation – malaria, dengue, Zika and West Nile fever. All are transmitted by mosquitoes, but they all have different origins or epidemiologically differ in their paths. As we enter the high holiday season and a period of higher temperatures, I wanted to share that after two years of no malaria cases, this year we have four cases and all of them are linked to Africa and the Indian Ocean, specifically the Maldives and Zanzibar. We have three cases of dengue linked to the Maldives and Zika, which is also linked to the Maldives,” said Minister Klekovski.
