Energy connectivity is key to greater security of supply and regional integration. This was emphasized by the United States Chargé d’Affaires Nicole Varnes, and MEPSO CEO Burim Latifi, during Friday’s visit to the Ohrid Substation.

In the presence of part of MEPSO management, Varnes was introduced to the dynamics of the implementation of the project for energy connectivity between North Macedonia and Albania.

The construction of the Ohrid Substation is in its final phase, while the construction of the 400 kV Bitola-Elbasan transmission line is progressing on the ground. The project, which is being implemented after more than three decades of planning, should enable connection to the electricity system in Albania and contribute to greater security of supply and stronger energy connectivity in the region.

As MEPSO stated, it was emphasized at the meeting that the project is part of broader efforts to complete the regional energy connectivity of North Macedonia, with planned new interconnections with Kosovo and Bulgaria, as well as an upgrade of the existing 400 kV interconnection with Greece.

According to MEPSO, these projects will create conditions for greater cross-border exchange of electricity and easier integration of new production capacities, especially from renewable sources.
