The cost of living index in January 2026 recorded an annual increase of 3.2 percent compared to the same month the previous year, shows the latest report by the State Statistics Office (SSO).
Moreover, the report states that the retail price index went up by 1.2 percent.
Inflation, measured by the cost of living index, dropped by 0.7 percent in January compared to the previous month.
According to data from the SSO, the decrease in cost of living is the result of lower prices in several sectors. The largest drop in January compared to the previous month was recorded in the transport group, where there was a decrease of 9.3 percent.
In addition to transport, the information and communications sector also contributed to the decrease in inflation, which was lower by 1.6 percent.
There was also a drop in costs in the recreation, sports and culture group, which was lower by 1.5 percent in January. Clothing and footwear recorded an increase of 1.2 percent.
Increases were registered in housing and household equipment, which in January were higher by one percent compared to the previous month.
In the groups of restaurants and hotels, the increase was by 0.7 percent, and in alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics by 0.1 percent.
In January, compared to December, the cost of living in the group of food and non-alcoholic beverages remained at the same level as in the previous month, without changes.
The State Statistics Office added that the retail price index in January recorded a decrease of 2.7 percent compared to the previous month, and on an annual basis the retail price index recorded an increase of 1.2 percent.
