As of Wednesday, citizens with a B category car driver’s license have the right to drive motorcycles with an automatic transmission of the “A1” category with an engine displacement of 125 m3 and whose engine power does not exceed 11 KW, after the amendments to the Law on Road Traffic Safety entered into force.

The legal amendments were prepared and forwarded by the ZNAM Movement MP group with the support of the majority of MPs, and on April 8 this year they were voted on by an overwhelming majority in the Parliament. In the meantime, administrative procedures for the Rulebook prepared by the Ministry of Internal Affairs were ongoing, with the publication of which in the Official Gazette today, the legal amendments came into force.

As explained by ZNAM MP Pavle Arsovski in the Parliament, the law stipulates that in Macedonia, a driver who holds a category B driving license will have the right to drive motorcycles with an automatic transmission of category “A1” after reaching the age of 23 and having held a valid category B driving license for at least 5 years and having a certificate of attendance at a 4-hour theoretical training.

“As legislators, we had in mind that such solutions would encourage the use of smaller and more economical motor vehicles, reduce traffic congestion in urban areas and greatly improve the mobility of citizens. In fact, the use of motorcycles in traffic, in addition to greatly easing traffic flow, represents one of the cheaper options for alternative urban transportation. This means that they allow greater flexibility and practicality, especially in urban areas where traffic congestion is pronounced. Motorcycles of the A1 category are a practical and economical means of transportation that takes up less space both on the roads and when parking,” said Arsovski.
