The Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) has prevented the import of approximately 50 tons of unsafe food onto the Macedonian market, after inspection services discovered serious irregularities in two shipments at the Kjafasan border crossing.

The shipment was 27 tons of ground beef from Paraguay, which was determined to have originated from a facility that was not approved by the Agency. Therefore, the shipment did not meet basic safety standards for import and there was a risk to consumer health.

The Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA) says that the decision was made after a detailed review of the documentation and data in their information system.

“The quantities that were to be imported originated from a facility that was not approved, which means that the food safety requirements are not met and there is doubt about its health safety,” informed the FVA.

In addition to the meat, inspectors also prevented the import of 22 tons of nuts from Kazakhstan. The reason for the ban was irregularities in labeling and deviations from the prescribed quality and safety criteria. The entire shipment has been returned to the country of origin and its sale in the country is not allowed.
