According to Eurostat data for 2025, the median age of the population in the country is 42.21 years, compared with 44.9 years in the EU.
Compared to 2015, the median age of the Macedonian population has increased by almost five years (37.4 in 2015).
Of the countries in the region, only Montenegro has a younger population (40.4 years), while Albania has an older population (44.3) and Serbia (45.4). The median age of Greeks is 47.2, and that of Bulgarian nationals is 47.2 years. In Croatia and Slovenia, the median age is 45.5 years.
Ireland has the youngest population (39.6 years), and Italy has the oldest (49.1 years) in the EU.
At EU level, the median age has increased by 2.1 years since 2015, when it was 42.8 years. The increase was recorded in all EU countries except Germany and Malta (-0.4 years). The population ageing is most pronounced in Slovakia and Cyprus, where the median value increased by 4.0 years, followed by Italy (+3.9 years), Greece and Poland (each +3.8 years) and Portugal (+3.7 years).
