Metallurgists Association formed – experts demand science to havegreater voice in mining debate

A new Metallurgists Association has been formed, aiming to finally give science, experts and expert analyses more space in the public debate. The new association is being formed at a time when Macedonia is increasingly debating the future of mining, industry and critical minerals, and positions are being strengthened to exploit the potential of mineral wealth such as the deposits near Ilovica and Plavica, worth hundreds of millions of euros, for the economic development of the country and a higher standard of living for its citizens.

The information was published by columnist and metallurgical engineer Viktor Grozdanov in his latest column, in which he writes that Professor GoranNachevski from the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy at the Saints Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje initiated the creation of an association that will work on the affirmation of metallurgy and the expert approach to industrial development.

Grozdanov assesses that political and populist debates about mining have dominated Macedonia for too long, while the voices of engineers, professors and experts have been pushed to the sidelines. Grozanov explains that modern mining and metallurgy cannot be considered outside of the scientific and technological context, especially at a time when the world is racing for copper, lithium and critical minerals needed for the energy and digital transition.
