Macedonian Minister of Digital Transformation Stefan Andonovski stressed that the goal of the MKSafeNet project is to raise awareness among the youngest about safe use of the internet, preventive action and indicating the consequences of irresponsible use of the internet. For now, no plans are being considered to ban the use of social mediafor children, the minister noted.

“The project has so far covered more than 70 schools across the country and tools and instructions have been shared with all parents and teachers through the Ministry of Education so that parents can have greater control over children who use the internet and protect them in the digital space,” Andonovski said.

Asked whether the Government is considering banning social media for the youngest, Andonovski stressed that such a step would be too radical.

“It is too radical when the country decides to ban a tool outright, because if we were to move in that direction, we could end up violating the right to free choice and free speech, but of course the Government and the Ministry remain open if there is an initiative for discussion,” the minister pointed out.
