Starting March 1, 2026, the legal obligation for enhanced authentication for online payments with payment cards comes into force in Macedonia.
Instead of the previous confirmation with an SMS code, payment card users will receive a notification via the mobile banking application on their smartphones and will have to approve the transaction. Confirmation is made with a PIN for the application, a fingerprint or facial recognition. Without this confirmation, the payment will not be able to be made, even if someone has the card data.
