Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova and the President of the Republic of India, Droupadi Murmu, attended the unveiling ceremony of the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Museum of the City of Skopje, a gift from friendly India, and visited the Memorial House of Mother Teresa.
President Siljanovska-Davkova assessed that the bust of Mahatma Gandhi is an expression of mutual respect and long-standing friendship between the two countries.
According to the Macedonian head of state, Mahatma Gandhi, as an apostle of non-violence, left a universal legacy that transcends national borders, inspiring generations of fighters for freedom, justice and human dignity.
She recalled that the Gandhian philosophy of non-violence and the right of peoples to freely determine their own future was also reflected in the Macedonian historical experience, through the peaceful independence in 1991.
President Siljanovska-Davkova pointed to the deep spiritual connection between Mahatma Gandhi and Saint Mother Teresa, emphasizing that it was in multicultural Skopje, the city in which Mother Teresa was born and raised, that the values that would later lead her to her humanitarian mission in India were shaped.
Indian President Droupadi Murmu believes that in a time we are facing today, such as conflicts, intolerance and division, Gandhi’s belief in dialogue, compassion and peaceful coexistence remains important.
“Mahatma Gandhi belonged to India, but his message belongs to all humanity. His life shows that truth, non-violence, are not signs of weakness, but powerful instruments for ensuring justice, freedom and dignity,” said India’s President Droupadi Murmu.
