The latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that the Macedonian diaspora in the United States of America is most concentrated in the state of Michigan, where 12,390 people who declared themselves to be of Macedonian origin reside.
New York takes the second spot with 11,214 Macedonians, while third spot belongs to Illinois with 6,648. There are also significant communities in New Jersey (6,138), Ohio (4,986) and Indiana (3,898).
The data based on five-year estimates (ACS 2024) shows that the Macedonian community is widespread across the United States, with a large presence in California (3,286), Florida (3,011) as well as Texas (1,933).
In the second half of the list are Pennsylvania (1,500), Connecticut (1,335) and Massachusetts (1,142), while smaller but stable communities are also registered in Virginia, Arizona, Washington and North Carolina.
The Macedonian diaspora is also recorded in less expected states such as Alaska (352) and Nevada (301), which indicates a wide geographical distribution.
According to the methodology, the numbers refer to people who reported Macedonian origin, which means that the real number of emigrants may be higher.
These data confirm the long-standing tendency of a strong presence of Macedonians in the northeastern and industrial part of the United States, especially in regions with historical migration related to industry and economic opportunities.
