In front of the monument to the Pirin Tsar and Macedonian freedom fighter Jane Sandanski, the 111th anniversary of his death was marked with particular solemnity, dignity and a strong patriotic charge in Melnik on Monday. The event was not just an act of remembrance, but a powerful confirmation that the ideals of freedom, justice and national dignity are not faded pages of history, but a living force that still unites Macedonians today.
The gathering grew into a pan-Macedonian unification, where Macedonians from Pirin and Aegean Macedonia, as well as from other parts, gathered with a common goal, to pay their respects to Sandanski’s work and to confirm their unwavering determination to preserve the Macedonian identity. In an atmosphere filled with emotions, pride and perseverance, those present sent a strong message that Macedonians cannot be erased or silenced, regardless of historical and contemporary challenges.
Particularly significant was the presence of the director of the Macedonian Cultural and Information Center in Sofia, Professor Zoran Pejkovski, who in his capacity as a diplomatic advisor provided visible and substantial support to the event. By laying a bouquet of fresh flowers in front of the monument to Jane Sandanski, he paid deep respect to the figure and work of the freedom fighter, while at the same time sending a message about the continuity of the struggle for cultural and national self-determination. His presence was experienced as a symbol of the connection between institutions and the people, but also as a clear sign that the Macedonian cultural and national cause has its own loud and dignified representatives.
Representatives of organizations that, despite long-standing bans and restrictions, continue to act in the direction of protecting the rights of Macedonians, also took part in the gathering. Along with the Macedonian MPs from the VMRO-DPMNE MP group, Daniela Hristova, Dushko Ivanov, Petar Markov, then Prof. Dr. Stojko Stojkov and other activists, they once again emphasized the need for perseverance, solidarity and unwavering faith in justice. Their presence and engagement are testimony that the fight for basic human and national rights does not stop, but is transmitted and strengthened with each new generation.
During the event, it was repeatedly noted that Jane Sandanski’s work represents an inexhaustible source of inspiration. His fight for freedom and dignity remains a guiding principle today, reminding that true values are not subject to oblivion.
Those present recalled with deep respect that Sandanski was not only a historical figure, but a symbol of defiance and a vision for the future.
The gathering in Melnik sent a clear and unambiguous message: Macedonians exist, persevere and will continue to preserve their identity. Borders cannot divide their belonging, nor push away their history. On the contrary, they only strengthen the awareness of togetherness and the need to preserve national heritage.
